Bert van Marwijk at a Glance

Lambertus “Bert” van Marwijk is the current Dutch national soccer team’s coach. He was born in Deventer, Overijsssel, Netherlands on May 19, 1952.

In the 1970s, van Marwijk played for mostly MVV Maastricht, and also Go Ahead Eagles, AZ and Fortuna Sittard, as an attacking midfielder. He also has one cap for the national team.

As a coach, van Marwijk started as a youth coach and became a full time coach in 1988. He coached his former team, Fortuna Sittard into the KNVB Cup final in1999. Three years later, van Marwijk took Feyenoord to win the UEFA Cup. He then went on to manage Borussia Dortmund before returning to Feyenoord and winning the 2008 KNVB Cup.

Although not the fans’ choice of coach for the Dutch national team, van Marwijk has won all eight of his World Cup qualifying games.
