Jamie Carragher: I Will Play Anywhere England Need Me To
England defender Jamie Carragher has said that he is willing to play any role manager Fabio Capello assigns him in this summer’s World Cup.
“Centre-back is my best position. I think everyone is aware of that,” the 32-year-old told reporters.
“But if you look at the squad maybe the manager does see me playing a different position, which is something I will have to adapt to.
“Basically, I will just do whatever the manager says.”
After playing in his favoured centre-back role when winning his 35th international cap against Mexico, it is much more likely that Carragher will be used as cover for team-mate Glen Johnson at right-back during the World Cup.
Carragher’s versatility means that he could also be used on the left side of defence during the tournament, or even as an unlikely holding midfielder if Gareth Barry fails to prove his fitness ahead of England’s opening group game against the USA.
If he is used in this position, it is likely to be just for one game, with reports of positive news coming from Barry’s scan on his injured ankle yesterday.
Although it seems likely that Carragher will be in England’s 23-man squad for South Africa after Capello spent such a long time convincing him to come out of retirement, the defender himself is remaining realistic about his chances.
“It’s up to the manager,” he said.
“There is another game against Japan and another week’s training. After that we will see.”
