Steven Gerrard today insisted he has no intention of quitting international football.

Gerrard, who captained England during their woeful FIFA World Cup™ campaign in the absence of the injured Rio Ferdinand, said the 4-1 defeat by Germany would not be his 84th and last game for his country.

“There is no way I want the disappointment of the Germany game to be my last for England,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s official website.

“It was such a low and I am determined to do as much as I can to make amends for what happened.

“I expect there to be a lot of changes to the squad and it is up to the manager whether I am selected, but I am going to continue to make myself available for my country.”

Liverpool captain Gerrard, 30, has scored 17 goals for England. His Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher, who was persuaded to come out of international retirement by Fabio Capello for the South Africa tournament, has said he will no longer be available for selection.

Tim Cahill has refused to commit to Australia’s AFC Asian Cup campaign in January and insisted he is putting Everton first before considering whether he will play in another World Cup.

Cahill, who endured a mixed World Cup campaign with a controversial red card in the fateful opening loss to Germany before scoring in the defeat of Serbia, returns to action on Saturday when Everton take on A-League champions Sydney FC in the first match of their pre-season tour of Cahill’s native Australia.

Cahill will be 34 when the World Cup next takes place and when asked about his aspirations to take part in the tournament in Brazil, he said: “My main focus now is Everton. I think as long as I stay fit and keep playing consistently then I’ll be happy – we’ll see what happens in four years.”

However, Everton manager David Moyes believes the player has the longevity to play a key role in Australia’s next World Cup campaign. Moyes – speaking at a press conference to promote Everton’s tour, which also includes matches against Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar – said: “I think he is fit enough to see another World Cup. I think he’ll be strong enough and able to go for another one – so hopefully it’s not his last one.”

Cahill declared himself ready to return to club duties despite having barely had a rest this year, but when attention turned to the Socceroos’ 2011 Asian Cup campaign, he would not commit to the three-week tournament, which begins on January 7 in Qatar.

Cahill said: “I’m lucky I’ve got a great relationship with the manager and the players and the whole staff. It’s all about being sensible. I’m lucky I’ve got the right people to talk to and assess that situation when it comes to it.”

Moyes insisted he would not stand in Cahill’s way should he choose to play for his country, saying: “If it comes in under the FIFA regulations we always abide by them. We admire Tim because we’ve all travelled out here from England and our players are all still in their beds with jetlag. For Tim to travel out here and play (for the Socceroos) and then return to play in the Premier League is an incredibly hard thing to do. It should never be underestimated how difficult that is.”

On Cahill’s dismissal against Germany, Moyes added: “When I saw the sending off I thought it was a terrible decision. Tim prepared all through the year. To get sent off for that could have ruled him out of the whole World Cup.”

With a rollercoaster World Cup out of the way, Cahill said he is just looking forward to the upcoming club season: “I think the best thing for me is focusing on this pre-season and a big season because we put so much time and effort in every year to be as good as we can be and set some targets that we like to live up to.”

Cahill was quick to allay fears he has not had a long enough break following the World Cup: “I think I’m lucky, the gaffer is not putting me through my paces too much. This is my country and I want to represent my country and my club as best as I possibly can but there’s a programme in place for me where I’m not getting flogged and they’re very sensitive to me. So I am getting my break and getting my right time (to recover) and obviously looking forward to being a part of this tour.”

Moyes hopes the change of scenery will translate into early season success when the Premier League campaign starts on August 14.

Moyes said: “We’ve tended to choose America in recent years but we’ve not started the season too well in the last couple of years, so I’m hoping Australia brings us a bit of luck.”

Fabio Capello looks set to survive as England head coach thanks to a groundswell of support among the Football Association hierarchy.

Sir Dave Richards, the Premier League chairman who also heads the new ‘Club England’ national team project, is now being urged to recommend to the FA board Capello is kept on despite England’s World Cup failure.

There is a feeling the blame for England’s disappointing performance and second round exit can be traced back to a lack of youth development, not Capello’s ability, and that a new manager would have the same problems as the Italian.

It is understood Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA’s director of football development and a key figure in the process, wants Capello kept on for the rest of his contract until 2012. Brooking’s view is that replacing him with another manager will not solve the underlying problem with English football, and a number of FA board and international committee members are also of the same opinion.

At the FA’s post mortem of the World Cup fiasco, Brooking will argue for a properly-funded long-term masterplan to bring through young players, starting by increasing the number of coaches at youth level. Capello’s 10 years’ experience working at AC Milan’s academy during the 1980s also add weight to the argument for him to stay as he could have a major input into the future development of young players.

Some FA figures believe the £9million that would be saved by not firing Capello and employing a replacement on a similar salary level would be a good start in terms of funding youth development. The remaining two years on Capello’s contract would also give Stuart Pearce more experience both at under-21 level and as the Italian’s assistant, and grooming him to be a ready-made replacement in 2012.

The FA’s post-mortem will also include a big debate on the future of youth football. The Professional Game Youth Development Group, set up in 2008 following a review by Richard Lewis and headed by Howard Wilkinson, was disbanded after just one year by the Football League and Premier League. Since then there has been no decision-making body in control of youth development in English football.

Richard Caborn, the former sports minister who forced through the Burns review of the FA, said: “We can’t just deal with the symptoms, we have to get to the root of the problem. English football and the Premier League have to come together to develop young English players. Fabio Capello is one of the best coaches in the world and if the FA replace him then it is just papering over the cracks and the same problem will come up again.”

The issue of a winter break is also likely to come up again – former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson believes the Premier League must introduce one if the national side are to be successful at major tournaments. Capello also spoke of the need for a break in his final press conference before England departed South Africa on Monday.

England goalkeeper David James insists that Sunday’s eagerly anticipated knock-out clash with old rivals Germany in Bloemfontein is “just another football match”.

England have a long history of high-profile clashes with the Germans at major tournaments, often coming off second best, and there will be a place in the World Cup quarter-finals at stake when the two teams meet at the Free State Stadium.

But despite the headline-grabbing nature of the match, James is paying little attention to all the hype.

“It’s another football match,” James said. “Obviously there’ll be a lot of external references and whatever else, historical references. But for us it’s a game against a decent outfit – one we have to win to progress.”

Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Slovenia secured England’s place in the knockout phase, but Landon Donovan’s stoppage-time winner for USA against Algeria meant Capello’s side finished second in Group C and face Group D winners Germany rather than runners-up Ghana.

The outcome left England in a tough quarter of the draw, with Argentina potential semi-final opponents, but James is not concerned about what might have been.

“We can’t do anything about what happened,” he said. “We look back at the America game and the performance of Tim Howard which prevented a win.

“Algeria are very difficult to score against, and then we did what we needed to against Slovenia on Wednesday.”

James is prepared for the possibility of facing penalties against Germany – just as England had to in the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup and Euro ‘96 – but is hoping it does not go that far.

“The intention for us is to win the game in 90 minutes,” he said. “If it requires extra time and then if it goes to penalties, there’s an opportunity for Germany to miss so we’re ready.

“Germany are a decent outfit but we’ve got the confidence of having gone to Berlin a couple of years ago and beaten them 2-1.”

James added: “I’m delighted for England as a nation that we’ve got a chance to play Germany. It gives everyone at home the opportunity to enjoy a great football match.”

John Terry has apologised to Fabio Capello and his team-mates for his stunning public outburst which undermined the England manager.

Terry caused a huge stir in the England camp when he took to a press conference on Sunday to criticise Capello’s decision not to select Joe Cole, telling reporters the players would take things into their own hands in a France-style mutiny if Capello didn’t adhere to their views in a team meeting to follow. Capello hit back on Monday, describing former skipper Terry’s actions as a “big mistake”.

As support from his team-mates has failed to materialise, Terry has been forced to backtrack on his comments and give Capello his full backing. Terry contacted the Daily Mail to publicly apologise and said he wanted to put the matter behind him and his team-mates as they prepare for Wednesday’s make-or-break clash with Slovenia.

“I went into yesterday’s press conference with the intention of being honest,” Terry said. “I was asked a question about Joe Cole and maybe I went too far. But it was never my intention to upset the manager or the players and if I did upset anyone, I apologise. I have told the manager he has my total support and I would like to stress that I don’t believe I have been a disruptive influence in the camp.

“I would now like to put this episode behind me and concentrate on trying to win what is a massive game for England. All I was trying to do was to say how important it is to me to try to win the World Cup. I just hope people at least appreciate that I have taken the time to call you and have asked you to report what I have to say in response.”

In his press conference, Terry had openly challenged Capello, saying: “If it upsets him then I’m on the verge of just saying, ‘So what, I’m here to win it for England’.”

On the eve of England’s opening game against USA, coach Fabio Capello has stated his team can reach the World Cup final, along with confirming that Gareth Barry will be fit enough to be named on the bench for Saturday’s game.

Capello is confident that his squad are ready for the test that Bob Bradley’s team will provide in Rustenburg.

“England are ready for this match,” Capello said. “The first game is always hard because expectation levels are really big. But we have been here eight days, training has gone very well and we are confident. We know the expectation levels of the fans is really good. I genuinely believe we have a squad that can make it to the final.”

The Italian said on Thursday that he already knows his starting XI for the Group C clash, but he will not let his players know until two hours before kick off.

“I will not tell the players who is playing until two hours before the game, which is what I always do,” Capello said. “The reason I do that is because if you name the side overnight and then someone is injured, it is not easy to recall the other player who was not originally picked.”

“What I am looking for is the same spirit that England showed in qualification games for the World Cup. I want us to be really compact on the pitch.

“These players are physically fine and their minds are very focused on this game coming up. They have a lot of desire and appetite to do well. The players here are the best English players. I am confident.

On Manchester City’s Barry, Capello confirmed he has returned from training following an ankle injury.

“He has been training normally for three days, training hard, and he will be on the bench.”

Capello also spoke about star striker Wayne Rooney, commenting that while he wants the Manchester United star to preserve his all-action style, he must must respect the tournament’s officials.

“I hope we see the same Rooney during the World Cup,” he said. “I have spoken with him but Rooney is a fantastic player because he wants to win. The hunger in him is very strong to win. But you have to be careful every time and also in this World Cup you have to be careful and respect the referees.”

England and USA are joined in Group C by Algeria and Slovenia, who also go head-to-head on Saturday.
